Autumnal Awakening
by R.E. Slater
As I awake the changeling dayI hear but filling silence fallingIn nearby stand of autumn woodPreparing quietly its winter slumberIn Netherland dreams of renewal.I am reminded these present trialsWhich die awhile before awakeningOf hopes falling like rotting leavesLumped upon a browning groundsUseful the sleeping insect and larvae.Woods shorn their mighty coloursAwaiting its new day of rebirthSowing upon the cooling earthReminders its resting hallowsMerely grasped for rake or fire.So is borne upon an autumn dayTroubled good for struggling heartsSowing warmths preparing slumberTo resurrect on a distant weatherThere to grace a trodding path.
